UK-based FTDI is a specialist in converting legacy peripherals to Universal Serial Bus (USB), offering the easiest route to USB migration by combining USB-Serial (USB-RS232) and USB-FIFO silicon solutions with their ready-to-go royalty free USB drivers.  FTDI's widely popular USB conversion solutions offer reduced development and debug costs and a fast time to market. The FT232R and FT245R are the latest additions to its growing range of USB toUART and USB to FIFO conversion solutions.

FTDI also offers the Vinculum family of embedded USB Host Controller devices.  The Vinculum USB Host Controller ICs not only handle the USB Host Interface and data transfer functions, but owing to the inbuilt 8/32-bit MCU and embedded Flash memory, Vinculum encapsulates the USB device classes as well.  When interfacing to mass storage devices such as USB Flash drives, Vinculum also transparently handles the FAT file structure communicating via UART, SPI or parallel FIFO interfaces via a simple to implement command set. The initial product member of the family is the VNC1L device, featuring two USB Ports which can be individually configured by firmware as Host or Slave ports.

FTDI is pleased to announce the release of the new Vinculum-II (VNC2) which is FTDI’s 2nd generation of USB Host / Slave controllers. The device features a powerful 16-bit MCU core, with embedded 256KB Flash and 16KB RAM memory. The device supports a range of flexible interfaces including UART, SPI, FIFO and PWM. The complete USB protocol data processing is handled entirely by hardware resources within the device freeing up processing resources for user developed applications.

The VNC2 is a fully programmable device and is supported with the new Vinculum Software Tool Suite, which provides an easy to use ‘C’ based development environment to enable user firmware development. The VNC2 offers a complete USB system solution in a single IC.

Operating at USB Hi-Speed 480Mbps rate, this fast single channel bridge chip features either a flexible serial interface or parallel FIFO interface, with data transfer speeds up to 40Mbytes/s. Using a serial EEPROM interface, this device can be configured for a wide variety of asynchronous and synchronous serial standards, such as JTAG, SPI, I2C and UART as well as synchronous and asynchronous parallel FIFO interfaces. In addition, this device features the new synchronous, half-duplex FT1248 bus, which allows an engineer to trade off bandwidth for pin count using 1, 2, 4, or 8 data lines at up to 30Mbytes/s. The I/O structure is 3.3V with built-in tolerance for 5V, allowing the designer maximum flexibility when interfacing with FPGAs.  On-board voltage regulation provides 3.3V and 1.8V supplies from a 5V source, as well as a power-on-reset function. FTDI provides royalty-free virtual com port and D2XX drivers for Microsoft Windows (XP – Windows7), Apple Mac OSX, and Linux. This 48 pin device is available in either LQFP or QFN packaging, and is ROHS compliant.

The FT232R is a USB to serial UART interface with optional clock generator output, and the new FTDIChip-ID™ security dongle feature. In addition, asynchronous and synchronous bit bang interface modes are available. USB to serial designs using the FT232R have been further simplified by fully integrating the external EEPROM, clock circuit and USB resistors onto the device.

The FT232R adds two new functions compared with its predecessors, effectively making it a "3-in-1" chip for some application areas. The internally generated clock (6MHz, 12MHz, 24MHz, and 48MHz) can be brought out of the device and used to drive a microcontroller or external logic. A unique number (the FTDIChip-ID™) is burnt into the device during manufacture and is readable over USB, thus forming the basis of a security dongle which can be used to protect customer application software from being copied.

The FT232R is available in Pb-free (RoHS compliant) compact 28-Lead SSOP and QFN-32 packages.

The FT2232D is the 3rd generation of FTDI's popular USB UART/FIFO IC family.  This device features two multi-purpose UART/FIFO controllers which can be configured individually in several different modes.  As well as a UART interface, a FIFO interface and the Bit-Bang IO mode of the 2nd generation FT232BM and FT245BM devices, the FT2232D offers a variety of additional new modes of operation including a Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine (MPSSE) interface which is designed specifically for synchronous serial protocols such as I2C, JTAG and SPI bus.
